COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Oxford native Wilbur K. Lewis was rejected when he first tried to enlist in the Marines because of his race, but a new federal order let him join as one of the Montford Point marines during World War II—he faced segregation in training and on local transit. He later worked as a teacher, received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service, and died on Nov. 10, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering courage.  Oxford Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jack Nomina, a Miami University student in Oxford, won an award for his research on haptic actuators that may improve virtual reality training for fields like medicine and space. He tested smart materials during an eight-week program in South Korea and presented his work at the OSGC—he will continue his research toward a Ph.D.  Miami University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction for an Amtrak station in Oxford will begin in 2026 as part of the Chestnut Field Multimodal Station, with the new stop on the Cardinal Line expected to open later that year. Trains will serve Oxford six times per week with stops likely around 2:30 a.m.—a schedule that highlights the line’s low frequency and current ridership levels.  The Miami Student

  • Residents are urged to prepare for winter hazards by checking weather forecasts, insulating homes, and assembling emergency kits—packed with warm clothing and supplies.
