COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Earlier this month, the 2025 Hike-a-Thon brought hundreds of Miami and Oxford community members and many dogs to explore the Miami University Natural Areas trails—overseen by Biology professor David Gorchov and Field Manager Nancy Feakes. The event showcased local participation and outdoor recreation.  Miami University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Miami University’s plan to demolish and relocate Millett Hall near Cook Field will trigger a lengthy construction process that could expose nearby lecture halls and dorms to noise up to 130 decibels—critics say the disruption may lower student grades and affect campus life. Community members contend that leaving Millett Hall in its current location would avoid prolonged noise and preserve a familiar environment for students.  The Miami Student
  • Assistant professor Yang Zhang co-authored a new book titled Social Intelligence: The New Frontier of Integrating Human Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence in Social Space that was published over the summer and featured in Scienmag. The book explains how human and artificial intelligence can work together to address social challenges—highlighting fresh computer science research.  Miami University
  • Last week, the Miami University Board of Trustees approved changes to faculty workload and cut 76 low-enrolled programs to shift resources to growing majors—adding 15 to 20 new programs in fields like business and engineering. The board also approved plans to design a new basketball/volleyball arena, updated its Cleveland Clinic deal for the health sciences building, and extended the Oxford Community Arts Center lease for 10 years.  Oxford Free Press
  • At Miami University, Lt. Col. Bob Umholtz, known as Party Bob, shared lessons from his 20-year Air Force career on people-first leadership during a podcast with President Greg Crawford. He explained that effective leaders must take time for people + adapt their methods while staying true to their values.  Miami University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents of Oxford and nearby townships will vote on three levies in the Butler County general election on Nov. 4 to fund senior citizen services, the Hanover Township fire district, and Milford Township ambulance and emergency medical services—if approved, these measures will take effect Jan. 1 with early in-person voting beginning Oct. 7 at the Butler County Board of Elections office.  Oxford Free Press

  • Miami senior Sean O'Donnell earned a coveted spot in the Cleveland Cavaliers' Foundation Class on September 30—after Miami University's Sport Career Exploration and Networking Expo. He will join the team in June 2026—next summer.  Miami University
