EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 4,000 students joined Miami University for move-in day and Welcome Weekend on the Oxford campus, and University Communications and Marketing captured the week’s events with photos, video, and audio—fall classes began on Monday.  Miami University
  • Miami University's Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble were chosen by a blind review to perform at the OMEA conference in Columbus, and the Wind Ensemble will also play in Ann Arbor in April. The groups will host concerts on campus later this semester—one at Halloween with the Frankenstein film soundtrack and one in December devoted to works by female composers with a premiere by Helen Hagan—showcasing Miami’s strong music program.  Miami University
  • Miami University in Oxford earned the title of one of America’s Best In-State Employers for the sixth straight year and is ranked 52 in Ohio based on surveys of employees at firms with over 500 workers. It was also recognized earlier this summer as one of America’s Best Employers for Women — an honor that reflects a welcoming work culture.  Miami University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Tuesday meeting at the Oxford Courthouse, the City Council voted against a resolution that would tie sidewalk fixes to paving projects but approved a new budget line for complete streets upgrades. The council also approved a $19,869 parking garage mural by Mathew Sharum for 6 Walnut St—this art project uses an optical illusion to show a red hawk and a waterfall and will be installed in 10 to 12 weeks.  Oxford Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Miami University's RedHawks football team begins its season today with a road game at Camp Randall Stadium against Wisconsin — they aim to rebound from last season. Coach Chuck Martin leads a roster strengthened by key transfer acquisitions and returning seniors as the team faces a challenging schedule with Big Ten and MAC opponents.  The Miami Student
  • Talawanda High School saw high participation from both boys and girls last season, showing a strong rise in wrestling as local youth join the sport. Head coach Andrew Merrell, whose daughter (a rising team captain) helped lead the Brave, said community support will drive further growth as the season begins in November.  Oxford Free Press
