- ➤ Charles Cornelius Barrows—born in Oxford in 1833—attended Miami University in 1853 and joined the Erodelphian Society but left in 1854. He became known for his landscape paintings and war sketches before dying of typhoid fever at age 30, and his remains were later moved to Oxford Cemetery. Oxford Free Press

- ➤ Miami University student Pimyotamah Hartleroad—a Myaamia citizen—taught young people how to play peekitahaminki on the National Mall during the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on July 29th. - ➤ Miami University is planning for fall with a $7 million quantum computing institute, a $1.5 million workforce training project, campus building demolitions for sustainability, and a new pickleball partnership with JOOLA—while a recent graduate ran over 100 miles in 24 hours to raise funds for a nonprofit that helps with medical debt. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ John and Bobbi Kinne released Asian wasps on their 53-acre woods near Oxford from 2019 to 2022 to fight emerald ash borers that were killing ash trees. Scientists and students are now reviewing insect traps to see if the wasps have become established—findings that may help control invasive species in local forests. Oxford Free Press
