- ➤ Philip Carter Shera—a native of Oxford—served as an engineer on the S.S. Java Arrow during World War II and died on May 5, 1942 when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship, prompting him to slow its engines so 44 crew members could be saved. He was posthumously honored with both the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal and the Mariner’s Medal, and his sacrifice is preserved in local history. Oxford Free Press
