  • Oxford NAACP held its annual Freedom Fund Banquet on April 26 at Miami University's Shriver Center where over 100 community members and sponsors gathered to honor local scholars and civil rights leaders — city officials proclaimed the day as NAACP Freedom Fund Day. Award recipients included three Talawanda students and community figures praised for their service and dedication to education.  Oxford Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Miami University said more men are joining its nursing programs. Nurse Hunter Edwards ’24— a Marine Corps veteran who was the first in his family to earn a college degree— explained that he chose nursing during the pandemic and believes the field offers many career paths for everyone.  Miami University
  • On April 30, Miami University President Gregory Crawford and University Ambassador Dr. Renate Crawford took their dogs Ivy and Newton to Great American Ball Park — joining the Bark in the Park event — for a day out. The outing was part of Miami University at Bark in the Park 2025 — an event that brought together campus leadership — and showed a relaxed side of university life.  Miami University
  • Bea Jones shared her research on making antibodies to fight Acinetobacter baumannii at the 31st Undergraduate Research Forum, working with her mentor Timothy Wilson. The event showcased student research opportunities across many subjects + helped build a strong mentoring network.  Miami University
  • Graduate student Rebecca Sossai in the Literacy and Language program at Miami University uses creative methods to make reading and writing more engaging for diverse learners plus she has built strong connections with professors and peers that prepare her for a future teaching career in elementary education and beyond. Set to complete her degree this spring, she plans to further her career by pursuing a Ph.D. and gaining experience in higher-level education.  Miami University

  • Oxford Township submitted its final draft land use plan to the county for review and is beginning spring cleaning of township property—trustees will soon request proposals to replace the damaged roof of the township building—while other projects continue as planned.  Oxford Free Press
